HTC Sensation XL review

Sensation XL

There’s no doubt that HTC is getting behind Beats Audio in a big way. This summer the manufacturer ponied up $300 million for a 51 percent stake in Beats, and since then it’s been quick to bring to market phones like the Sensation XE and Rezound, which include Beats earphones in the box and a Beats-optimized music player. The latest phone to launch in Europe with Beats support is the Sensation XL. Originally unveiled at a glitzy event in London back in October, the 4.7-inch XL is pitched as the first European phone designed from the ground up around Beats Audio.

The Sensation XL isn’t a replacement for the original Sensation in the traditional sense. Instead, HTC seems to be positioning both devices alongside each other, with the XL geared towards big multimedia consumers rather than spec-obsessed enthusiasts. But with formidable (and technically superior) competition from Apple, Samsung, Motorola and others, does the Sensation XL do enough to stand out from the ever-growing high-end smartphone crowd? Read on to find out.

The Good

A well-built device with a bright, vivid screen and responsive, feature-filled software. Beats headphones and software optimizations make this a great phone for music on-the-go. HTC Sense 3.5 is faster and slicker than ever.

The Bad

Lack of expandable storage. Screen resolution is lower than much of the competition. Disappointing video camera performance. No Beats support for third-party music players.

Conclusion

The Sensation XL might not represent the complete package for smartphone enthusiasts, but it's hard to fault the device as a whole. HTC's Sense UI is better than ever, and the bundled Beats hardware is a huge step up from the bog-standard earphones provided with most phones.

Elephant Quest is an addictive, deep platformer

elephantquest
When someone tells me about a "platformer", my first thought is that it's probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. [Play a Zelda game! -Ed]

Elephant Quest is one platformer that managed to prove me completely wrong. Yes, you do run and jump around, and you also shoot at stuff. But the game has much, much more going for it.

Basically, as you run, jump and shoot, you gain experience points and level up. Hitting Space brings you into an interface where you can convert your experience points into Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Dexterity points. Once you've "specialized" your points, you then get to pick what exact skills you'd like to enhance in each field. For example, you could use your dexterity to enhance your weapons or increase your swiftness.

The game is played in a huge maze; you go through rooms using doors, and there's a large map. As the name implies, there are quests you can take, too. For example, one quest had me searching all over the place for ten balloons.

The bottom line is that this is a surprisingly deep game that just might ensnare you for a good bit longer than you intended to play. Beware!

Right on Google’s Tail, Nokia Pushes Indoor Mapping Too

In what may have been the most modern version of Manifest Destiny to date, Google spent the better part of the last decade mapping the great outdoors. And on Tuesday, the company announced its intention to continue that quest, only indoors. Naturally, there will be latecomers to any party. Enter Nokia, which announced its own initiative for indoor mapping services at an event in Sunnyvale, CA on Tuesday.

How Apple's Grand Central Station Store Is Screwing New York [Apple]

The Grand Central Apple store isn't even open yet and it's already becoming a massive headache for New York. First was its garish video facade. Now comes word that Apple's lease on the space is jobbing the city's transit department out of a bunch of revenue. More »

British Library digitizes 300 years worth of newspaper archives, brings 65 million articles online

Britain's historical news junkies are in for a treat today, because the British Library has just digitized a major chunk of its newspaper archive, comprised of four million pages spanning some 300 years of headlines. With today's launch of the British Newspaper Archive, users can search and browse through a staggering 65 million articles from a range of regional UK papers, encompassing the most newsworthy events from the past few centuries. Developed in coordination with online publisher Brightsolid, the archive also allows for remote article access and download, saving researchers a trip to the British Library's newspaper depository in North London. The initiative seems similar to some we've seen from the Library of Congress in recent years, though the archive isn't completely open to the public. Users can search the site for free, but will have to pay a subscription fee to download any article as a PDF. And, expansive as the selection may be, Brightsolid and the Library are aiming to digitize a full 40 million pages over the course of the next decade.

Nevertheless, today's arrival marks an important first step for the British Library and, in a larger sense, British history -- on both individual and collective levels. "For the first time people can search for their ancestors through the pages of our newspapers wherever they are in the world at any time," Ed King, head of the library's newspaper collection, told the Telegraph. "But what's really striking is how these pages take us straight back to scenes of murders, social deprivation and church meetings from hundreds of year ago, which we no longer think about as we haven't been able to easily access articles about them." Be sure to check out the archive at the source link below, and be prepared to lose your entire afternoon in the process.

The Kindle Fire shows off some early CyanogenMod7 love

Kindle Fire CM7

Let's start off with this -- no it's not ready, and no we don't know when it will be. Now that we got that out of the way, XDA forums member JackpotCalvin has gotten a build of CM7 to boot on the Kindle Fire. While it is still an early build, and the image rotation is off, the developer says he knows how to do some fixes to get it more polished, and we can hope for a build we can play with in the coming weeks. This is definitely a good sign for those hoping to hack up their Kindle Fire!

Apple puts Galaxy Tab 10.1N on the chopping block, asks German court for preliminary injunction

It wasn't long ago that Samsung modified its Galaxy Tab 10.1 to get it back on the German market, and it didn't take long for Apple to respond. Apparently, Cupertino didn't take kindly to Sammy's sneaky workaround, and has filed for an injunction to stop the 10.1N from showing up on store shelves in Germany. The slate's fate will be determined on December 22nd, so we'll have to wait and see whether it joins its siblings on the sidelines, or is around to deliver some Honeycomb delights to those in Deutschland come Christmas morn.
