Install the Windows Phone 7 NoDo update regardless of your carrier

windows phone 7 nodoSome of you who own Windows Phone 7 devices are still waiting for your pre-NoDo preparation update -- never mind NoDo itself. A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn't work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team's Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device -- regardless of your carrier.
  1. Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)
  2. Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn't listed, stop and do not update.
  3. If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.
Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart's content. Let's just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we're supposed to receive Mango.

EU probes Samsung patent 'abuse'

Samsung tabletSamsung redesigned one of its European tablets after it was sued by Apple

Samsung's patent deals are being looked into by the European Commission.

Competition regulators are investigating whether the firm used some of its intellectual property rights to "distort competition in European mobile device markets".

The commission says it wants to know if Samsung has failed to live up to a commitment to license key technologies to rivals.

The action comes as the company is involved in patent battles with Apple.

A spokesman for Samsung said it did not have a statement to make on the case at this time.

The inquiry centres on Frand commitments - a promise by industry players to license innovations that are essential to an industry standard on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.

This means that the owner cannot discriminate who gets to use its invention and that its fee cannot be excessive.

The commission notes that in 1998 Samsung offered an "irrevocable commitment" to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to respect Frand terms.

But the regulator says that: "In 2011, Samsung sought injunctive relief in various member states against competing mobile device makers based on alleged infringements of certain of its patent rights which it has declared essential to implement European telephony standards."

Lost lawsuits

The South Korean firm has made more than a dozen patent claims against Apple in Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy relating to 3G-essential technologies.

So far the courts have ruled against Samsung in the cases - in part because it was felt that the firm had failed to live up to its Frand commitments.

However, patent consultant Florian Mueller, who has blogged about the various cases, notes that: "The European Commission can't wait until Samsung finally wins a ruling based on such a patent and enforces it, potentially causing irreparable harm."

A spokesman for the European Commission confirmed that it had instigated the proceedings. He said that the commission had not received an official complaint from Apple or any other company about the matter.

Counter-attacks

Samsung has also been on the receiving end of patent and design-rights litigation.

Some analysts view its lawsuits as a response to Apple's legal attack.

The iPad-maker succeeded in having two of its competitors' tablets banned from sale in Germany last year forcing a redesign.

The ruling against the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was upheld by the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court today.

Experts say the commission's intervention is likely to further complicate matters.

"It is really difficult for Samsung to have the commission wading in when none of its competitors have made a complaint," said Vicki Salmon, a member of the UK's Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys.

"At a time when there is a lot of litigation between companies it doesn't help to be on the receiving end of an official inquiry."

New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It's called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It'll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder -- and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

HTC Ville gets hands-on en Francais, is presumably practicing its Spanish for MWC (video)

HTC Ville gets hands-on en Francais, is presumably practicing its Spanish for MWC (video)

While we're still a few weeks away from annual phone festival, MWC, it's these weeks in the run-up that often draw out blurrycam appetizers of what we'll see over in Barcelona. This time, it's no other than the HTC Edge Ville, that rumored divergent mix of quad-core processing bulk and slimline form-factor: something we don't typically see the unibody-armored HTC family. In the leaked video, you'll be getting a look at a heavily disguised version of Ice Cream Sandwich, covered in contentious (but new!) Sense sauce. The mysterious handset mole is also kind enough to pay a visit to the phone's specification list, confirming, at least if this is the finished article, an eight megapixel camera, 4.3-inch qHD display and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. Alas, it looks like this isn't going to be the rumored quad-core debut from the Taiwanese phone maker, although going on past form, it won't shock us if the company reveals a whole line-up of handsets for us to meddle with next month. Take the tour yourself -- it's right after the break.

Update: Looks like the original video has been unceremoniously switched to private. Fortunately, we managed to grab a copy beforehand.

Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

google chrome malicious download
Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading -- a save button is still presented, of course, in case you're convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We'd like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon -- like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won't notice the icon or change in wording as they'll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you'll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.

FurniGadget: N+ew freezes your e-waste into a stool

This is one of Rodrigo Alonso's stools. It's part of a series of furniture called N+ew, which stands for "No More Electronic Waste," the Chilean artist felt the best way to dispose of electronic gadgetry that had fallen by the wayside, was to encase it in epoxy resin and sell it to aesthetes worldwide. As you can see, the collection has a rare, distinct beauty that recalls Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chair and Arne Jacobsen's No. 7 seat. If you find yourself unable to resist a purchase, bespoke editions can be ordered from the sculptor's website as the perfect conversation starter -- as long as you enjoy every conversation beginning with "What on earth possessed you to buy one of those things?"

Google demands veto on OEM Android changes, stretches definition of 'open source'

Google, according to reports from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the 'final' code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That's all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign 'non-fragmentation clauses.' This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they're unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android -- which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors -- and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft's Bing instead of Google search.

New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

TripAdvisor app for Windows Phone 7 now available

tripadvisor windows phone 7TripAdvisor, the popular travel planning tool, has just launched an app for Windows Phone 7. Just like the mobile website, the app allows you to search for anything travel-related -- from hotels and flights to restaurants and points-of-interest to visit once you reach your destination.

Geolocation is supported, which allows TripAdvisor to quickly locate places nearby. But while that's a neat feature, it's also a bit of a downer -- because, really, it's about the only feature TripAdvisor for WP7 brings to the table that its mobile Web app doesn't already offer (its browser-based geolocation doesn't work with WP7 at the moment).

While it's nice to see Windows Phone 7 users getting some big-name apps, it'd be even nicer if we saw some packing a bit more swagger.

Still, TripAdvisor for WP7 might just be worth installing on your device if you're frequently on the go -- at least until a better browser arrives with the Mango update.

Survival Lab is a fun pixelated game where dying doesn't matter

Survival Lab
In most games, dying is a bad thing. You have to start all over again, or at least revert to the last save point and lose some progress. Not so in Survival Lab: in this pixelated gem you play as a lone individual pitted against ruthless weapons in a sealed chamber. You have to run, jump and duck, collecting little yellow things (I have no idea what they're called).

For each donut-like yellow thing you pick up, you gain a bit of experience. If you manage to collect several in a row without getting hit, this counts as a combo. You can see my mad combo skills in the screenshot, of course. Collecting combos is a good thing, because a ten-point combo gives you for more experience than just collecting ten dounts one by one (getting hit in-between).

Having experience is useful, because once you die, you get to a screen where you can upgrade your skills. You can learn to run faster, double-jump (and then double-jump higher), and duck. You can also gain more armour so that getting hit won't kill you so quickly.

What makes this simple game so addictive is that when you die, your experience doesn't reset. You just go back to the same level, or another level of your choosing, and keep accumulating more and more experience. Lots of fun, especially if you're into the whole retro-gaming thing.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Nintendo DS gets voice recognition and cloud storage for teaching

Nintendo‘s main focus has moved from its very popular DS portable gaming unit to the 3DS. However, in its home territory work is still being carried out to extend the usefulness of the last generation device. The latest innovation is aimed at bringing the DS into the classroom. Not for gaming, but to aid with learning by recording lessons.

Nintendo has teamed up with NTT to implement voice recognition on the DS. With the voice recognition software running, students will be able to record what a teacher says in text form for later review. Rather than rely on storage on the DS, the recording of this information is stored in the cloud, taking advantage of NTT’s established mobile network to upload it.

When a student wants to review a lesson they’ve attended (or indeed missed) it is brought up on their DS as a virtual blackboard. Unfortunately, no voice is recorded alongside the text as far as I can tell, which seems like a missed opportunity. But then the main purpose of the system is to aid disabled children such as those that are hard of hearing.

The new system is still in development with trials beginning in Tottori Prefecture and Okinawa. Further development will also see the recorded text become interactive depending on the subject matter. There’s also a chance for this system to have a much wider appeal as it can apparently turn a DS into a communication device, allowing students to interact.

The Japanese-language news report below gives you a glimpse of what the app looks like and how the teacher records his voice. Hopefully the final system will allow him to teach hands free rather than relying on a handheld recorder.

iPhone 5 to include Mastercard Paypass for NFC?

It’s a pretty safe bet that the iPhone will be getting an NFC chip sometime soon. Though Near Field Communications haven’t found a lot of customer adoption yet, merchants are getting prepared for it. Perhaps the biggest piece of the puzzle that’s missing is Apple. If Tim Cook takes the stage and tells the world about how easy iPayments (or whatever they call them) are, then NFC will have officially arrived.

Some recent signs are pointing to 2012 as possibly being the year that Apple makes that leap and adds an NFC chip to the iPhone. Additionally, there are hints that we may even know who Apple is partnering with for its mobile payments.

Last week at Macworld, an app developer raised some eyebrows by pushing NFC capabilities in his iPhone app. When asked why he would bother doing this, the developer said that he had no knowledge of hardware but had spoken to iOS engineers who are “heavy into NFC.” He said that he was confident enough in Apple’s adoption of NFC that he was willing to stake his app’s development on it.

In a separate incident, a rep from Mastercard’s Paypass NFC system said “I don’t know of a handset manufacturer that isn’t the process of making sure their stuff is Paypass ready.” When asked whether that list includes Apple, the rep may as well have confirmed it:

“Um, there are… like I say, [I don't know of] any handset maker out there. Now, when we have discussions with our partners, and they ask us not to disclose them, we don’t.”

That sounds like someone who’s trying to brag as much as he can without breaking an NDA (non-disclosure agreement). Of course it’s possible that this was some clever gaming of reporters to garner buzz, but we’d say there’s a good chance that Paypass will be partering with Apple for the iPhone 5.

Of course Verizon famously blocked Google from allowing its Google Wallet NFC payment system on the Galaxy Nexus. Carrier politics are always an issue, but Apple is another story. Wireless providers need the iPhone on their networks, and Apple knows it. That’s not a guarantee that they will allow an Apple NFC payment system on the next iPhone, but negotiating power is in no short supply in Cupertino.

You can now rent Adobe Photoshop for $35 per month, CS 5.5 available soon

Rejoice! No longer will you have to fork over $700 for a Photoshop CS5 license! Adobe has unveiled a new subscription scheme where you can rent the entire Creative Suite, or individual packages, by the month, or for an entire year.

Adobe Photoshop can be yours for $35 per month if you agree to rent it for 12 months, or $49 per month if you require its services for a shorter period. Dreamweaver can be had for even cheaper, at just $19 per month. The entire Master Collection is still rather expensive, though, at $125 per month.

Today, Adobe also ushered in the release of Creative Suite 5.5, and simultaneously upped its release cycle from 18 months to 24 months. This means, if you rent Photoshop for two years, it's actually the same cost as buying it outright. There's no rent-to-own option, though -- so you wouldn't have access to the cheaper upgrade price once Creative Suite 6 rolls around next year. Still, if you need access to Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere for a one-time project, the new rental scheme could be exactly what you're looking for.

In other news, Adobe has announced that it will be launching three rather exciting iPad apps that work in conjunction with Photoshop: Eazel, Nav, and Color Lava. Eazel lets you five-finger paint on your iPad, and export the result into Photoshop; Nav acts as some kind of workspace, brush and menu extension, and the hopefully named Color Lava is a paint mixing palette. The apps are expected to appear in the App Store in the next 30 days.
