Windows Phone 7-based Nokia phones receiving Nokia Collection rollout

Nokia Collection

It looks like Nokia is beginning to rollout some of the mobile integration with the Windows Phone Marketplace it promised last February when it announced the strategic partnership it had formed with Microsoft. This comes in the form of a silent upgrade that adds an exclusive Nokia app section called the Nokia Collection to Windows Phone 7-based Lumia handsets. Some of the apps that are included with the new section are Contacts Transfer, Nokia Maps, and TuneIn Radio.

With the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) right around the corner, the release of this new feature isn’t a coincidence. With the quiet moves Redmond has been making to bring what I call the “Microsoft Experience” , an effort to bring platform unity to all the different devices that run Microsoft products, seeing this kind of integration taking place on Windows Phone 7 devices isn’t surprising. It only makes sense to give Nokia an area to push proprietary apps, the action lends credibility and shows unity between the two companies. Expect to see more of this in the future.

Nokia has a lot riding on the future success of Windows Phone 7. In making Redmond’s mobile OS its “primary smartphone strategy”, the former king of mobile devices is going all-in in a high stakes poker game against Apple and Google for dominance of the mobile market. Nokia has thumbed its nose at the Android OS, with its former CEO making odd statements involving metaphors containing Finnish urination habits. This coupled with the failure of the MeeGo OS put Nokia in a very bad position with nowhere to turn in a market that is dominated by iOS and Android. Teaming up with Microsoft involved a lot less strategy than the company would want you to think. It was a matter of survival.

Hopefully Nokia owners will see more goodies like the Nokia Collection head their way in the upcoming year. There is a video below that shows the new Nokia apps on a Lumia device.
