Prey 2 delayed because developer refuses to work on it

It has been known for a while that Human Head Studios have been working on a sequel to Prey and carrying the obvious name of Prey 2. The publisher of the game is Bethesda.

With no news appearing about development for a number of months though, no one was quite sure if the game was still going to see a release this year, or if it had in fact been canceled. Bethesda quashed fears of a cancellation by announcing yesterday via its blog that Prey 2 has simply suffered a delay because “game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year.”

That seems unusual seeing as Human Head is an experienced team, and it now turns out Bethesda may not have given us the complete picture. Shacknews has been told by an unnamed source that no one at Human Head has actually been working on the game since last November.

Apparently, the studio was not happy with the publishing contract Bethesda handed them. Work ceased last year until the contract could be renegotiated and a number of staff lost their jobs simply because there was no work to do. Bethesda seemed willing to talk things through, but then ceased communication in January, leaving both the game and the studio in limbo. For Bethesda’s part, they are sticking to their original statement of progress not being satisfactory and won’t say anymore than that.

What is clear now is the game won’t launch this year as it is at least 6 months behind schedule. Bethesda’s breaking off of communication also suggests it may be trying to get another developer to continue development of the title. Canceling it at this stage would incur some pretty big losses for the publisher no doubt.
